When James Polk was president, a young congressman by the name of Abraham Lincoln attacked him for starting the Mexican-American War. Under Polk’s leadership, the United States acquired half a million square miles of land, which today includes all of Arizona, California, Nevada, Utah, and parts of Colorado, New Mexico, and Wyoming.
